Sonia Copeland Bloom
SONIA COPELAND BLOOM grew up in West Sussex, although spent a lot of time boarding in Godolphin School, Salisbury. Her father, Dr John Copeland, was a doctor in India, and also worked with Sister Theresa on helping orphan children. Her mother was Betty Copeland, who played golf for Sussex, a singer and WI enthusiast. She has an elder sister , Penelope, and a younger brother Christopher.
Sonia decided she would be a writer when she was seven years old. She trained as a journalist on the Worthing Herald, before going to Spain to learn Spanish, doing a course at the Universities of Seville and Madrid. On her return to England, she worked on Vogue magazine, at the Central Office of Information for the Foreign Office. She married South African writer, barrister and freedom fighter Harry Bloom and went to live in Canterbury after he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer to the Law Department at the University of Kent, Canterbury.
Sonia was also appointed to the University of Kent as an information officer where she created and edited a magazine - FUSS - Forum for Staff and Students.
In 1972, she helped to found Concorde International Language School where she worked as a Director .
She had two children, Samantha Bloom, an actress, and Orlando Bloom the well-known popular film actor.
Being a keen golfer like her mother, she also founded Champion International Gold and English courses which she worked on in Canterbury until she retired.
On retirement she decided to take a Creative Writing Course at the University of Kent.
She now lives in Canterbury with her partner Charles and is, at last, a writer of books just as she has always wanted to be.
Her ambition? My wish is to hope my books about minibeasts will inspire little children to understand the importance of insects and see them turn into animated films for children.
